Sorry for the lack of updates. Hope you guys are enjoying the holidays before everything starts again!

And good luck to those of you who took the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) recently! On the subject of Japanese language, if you are interested in learning it, now is the time to consider taking up a class from the various Japanese schools around SMU, or hope that someone drops their Japanese class in BOSS 2(Which someone will bid ridiculously high for that vacancy anyway).

Some of the recommended schools that we know of would be:

Bunka Language Pte School - http://www.bunkalang.com/

Reviews: Their method of teaching is quite different as they start off bombarding you with all the different forms of Japanese, but you will get a firm foundation because of that. Highly recommended by their current students. Price is a bit on the high side, but most people would say its quite worth it. Location: Delfi Orchard

Ikoma Language School - http://ikoma.com.sg/jcourse/ongoing.htm

Reviews: Teachers are quite interesting, I went for their JLPT prepartory course, and it was effective, notes given were informative. The staffs and teachers will speak in Japanese when possible. Price is quite ok. Location: Orchard, Shaw House

Japanese Cultural Society - http://www.jcss.org.sg/jls.html

Reviews: I attended their intensive intermediate lessons 2 years back. The teacher was kindda boring.. Maybe there are more interesting teachers around, but I find that their teaching methods and syllabus were very grammer based. It wasn't very effective for me. The classrooms were cramped too. It is cheap though. Registration starts soon and its only once a year! (unless u wanna take the intensive course, which I wouldn't recommend. Its just too much to absorb after our normal classes..) It is recognised by SMU though, if you manage to get an exchange in a Japanese uni. The yearly JLPT is organised by them. Location: Opposite Bugis Junction, Middle House @ Middle Road

Of course there are other schools that offer Japanese Language, do email us and show it with the other members if you find that they offer good services. We will be glad to post it up.

Cosplay Carnival! Banzai!

And so the mid-term break has come and gone. As i sit here and groan about the prospects of facing hell again, a part of me is being nostalgic over the last few events the club has organised. If anyone can recall, the club has recently embarked on its virgin cosplay carnival and it was a great success! Lots of new members and familiar faces visited our booth beside Kopitiam. You would not have been able to guess how comforting and excited that was! With costumes from Bleach, Naruto and Haruhi as well as traditional yukatas, we have managed to capture and captivate you guys. Honestly, who can argue that the Ichigo's sword isn't suave or intimidating enough? Who can resist posing as the Jekyll and Hyde Yagami Light ready to met out his deliverance? Besides, ain't the shurikans cool enough for you to be someone straight from Naruto? The added bonus of the Nintendo WII has also surely helped to ease some of the stress you guys are facing! So enough of me talking about the event, let me showcase some of the greatest narcissism of the century. Enjoy!

Survival Japanese Class and TGIF this friday!

Survival Japanese will be held this Friday, 14 September 2007.

Time: 4pm - ~5pm
Venue: LKCSB SR3.9

We welcome all JCC members who are interested to come for this Survival Japanese class even if you have no experience in the learning of Japanese. It is a great chance for you to meet up and make friends with the others who are from JCC!

For those coming, please think of two places, points A and B within walking distance near or in school. We will be learning basic greetings and ways to ask for directions.

Similar to the previous week, the room beside the survival japanese class i.e.SR 3.8 will still be booked by JCC from 3.30pm till 6.30pm and you guys are free to come to the SR to do your work or simply to chill and chit chat with the others.

IMPORTANT: For all old and new members of JCC, please email us on your attendance and whether are you meeting us at Clementi. (except for the new members who already indicated during Big Gathering) this is crucial as we need to know roughly who we are going to expect and look out for at Clementi MRT on Saturday.

Basically WSSH is having their annual school festival and SMU JCC has been invited to go for their festival.

There is no official end time. We are all free to stay in their school for as long as you wish until the end of their event. As there is no transport provied, everyone will have to make their own way home.

As for the meeting up at Clementi MRT station, we will allow some time to wait for latecomers but do understand that we will not be able to wait forever.

Thus for the late comers, you may have to make your way there on your own. Likewise, for those who can only go WSSH in the afternoon (i.e unable to meet us), do take note of the instructions on how to get there. Below are the links to the directions on how to get to WSSH.

Firstly, we would like to thank all of you who came down for Big Gathering on Saturday. We hope that you have gained a better understanding of JCC as a club and our activities.

Japanese Speech Contest 2007

The Speech Contest was held earlier today at JAS. It was indeed an eye opener for someone who hopes to pick up the language one day. As an audience member, it is inspiring to see others with similar interest like us be able to converse so fluently in the Japanese language. Granted that theirs speeches were memorised, it also reflected how much thought and practise was put into making it to the finals of this Speech Contest.

There was a few categories- secondary, junior college, tertiary and open. As I only attended the tertiary and open catergories sections, the topics spoken about ranged from 痩せてどうする to　饮水思源 or even to Singlish. The first prize was a return air ticket to Japan, the second was a 20in LCD tv and so on..

The contestants had an enjoyable time too and I look forward to seeing some of our JCC members participate next year! Trying once for the competition does not barr you from trying again the next year so TRY and TRY again!

Orchard Road's little secret!

For ramen lovers, here's a new place to add to those ramen places that you frequent. The best part of it all? It's in the heart of town. Ken's noodle house is in Orchard Plaza. For those who are not familiar with the region, it's the building before Hotel Meridien and after Orchard Point (OG).

Ok, enough about the location. Let's move on to the food.

The ramen ordered was cha siew ramen and stewed egg ramen as shown in the pictures below. In addition, gyoza was also ordered. The selection of ramen is less if you compare it to other ramen places like ramen ten, ajisen but I'm sure the quality of the food more than makes up for it. There's miso or shoyu ramen as well. Cold Soba for those looking for something else too.

After a short wait, the food arrived! Let's just say that I love the fact that Japanese are soooo big on presentation. The ramen arrived looking like those goregous window displays. Ken's noodle house's ramen is not only fantastic looking but also absolutely delicious. The ramen soup is cooked up to 8 hrs such that the flavours are immersed in the soup and makes you want to finish up the whole bowl of soup. The cha siew ramen came with 4 huge slices of cha siew while the stewed egg ramen had 2 slices of cha siew and one stewed egg. The stewed egg was so beautiful. It looked like a normal hardboiled egg but when you bite into the yolk, it's like a lovely gold nugget of 3/4 boiled yolky goodness. :) The noodles were springy and at first glance, it seemed to be like the normal yellow egg noodles in other foodcourts. However, one bite into the noodles and the ramen speaks for itself. This is one noodle that is firm and springy, good to slurp up and lacks the artificial instant noodle or factory made taste. This is despite the fact that the noodles are made by a Japanese style factory in Malaysia(read from other sites).

The serving sizes are quite big so you are indeed getting your money's worth. It's about $12 for a ramen and $1/2 if you want to add other toppings. After the ramen that is so satisfying, the gyoza seemed mediocre next to it. As for the place, there was two units for the restaurant. Ice water will be served immediately so there is pretty good service.

The restaurant opens until 2am so you're shopping late in town or clubbing and feeling hungry, here's one place you shouldn't miss!

Time for some exciting updates!

We have planned up some pretty interesting events to be held in the new school year, some of which includes our annual camp, Natsu No Hi, a cosplay event and teaching you guys wei qi (Also known as Go!)

Cosplay event sounds interesting right? Yup, you will get to dress up as your favourite anime character and have a picture of you taken my our in house photographer, Edmund! Details to be finalised.

We even contemplated to have a Japanese mahjong workshop, but figured out the proposal would be hard to get through.. haha..

Do write us an email or just type in the tagboard at the side if you have any requests for events! We will surely look into the feasibility of the request.

Ok.. now for some interesting stuff you can spend your money on!

The newly opened Central, at Clark Quay station host a lot of new Japanese restaurants.. I think the 4th storey has a lot of good ones, a ramen place there looks good, but I have not tried.. maybe this weekend.. I went to the place called Tom Ton, which sells black pig stuff.. They have a branch at Liang Court, called Tampopo.. Heard the ramen there is really good too..

Not cheap though.. but the food was delicious.. I got a 2 person set meal..

Ok.. thats all for now.. Next update maybe i'll show more food.. haha..

Origami Workshop

Following up on my previous entry: we actually did organize a Origami Workshop on Tuesday, 13th Feb 2007. The theme of the workshop was to teach students how to fold Origami roses. As the event clashed with Week 7 (Midterm week), the turnout, well as expected, wasn't too good.

Here's a pic of our instructor, Mr. Harvey Cheong, who was trying to teach us how to fold the Kawazaki roses.

According to him, he knows how to fold 4 kinds of Origami roses, but due to time constraints, he only taught us two out of the 4.

Again, I would like to extend my most sincere thanks to Harvey. He kindly offered his time to come down and help conduct the Origami workshop, right after his IE midterm. Ima wa kokuhaku no kikai da (This is your chance to confess your love)! This is the theme for our Origami booth for 2007. The booth was set up from 12th Feb to 14th, and the aim was to spread the culture of Origami to the student population. So what exactly happened was that we set up the booth at the heart of the school campus, and we pestered anyone who walked past our booth to fold a origami heart. Haha (*Sinister grins)

Here's a picture of the origami hearts that we made. (top) There were actually 3 kinds of hearts. What you are seeing now is the standing hearts, but we also folded 'heart with wings' and 'heart with attached message'.

The aim of our booth was to filled the two blank black boards up with origami hearts and dedicated messages by the SMU students.

At the start of the first day, 'business' wasn't really fantastic. We were located at the godforsaken T-junction, and many people darted us with supsicious looks as they hurried past our booth via the 7-ll 'sky ladder'. So it wasn't a surprise that our first few customers were all from JCC.

Below are two pic of the people manning the booth and our first few patrons. And please do not like stare too long at the bottom photo, cos your eyes will be like erm blinded by the mushy lovey dovey aura emanated by the erm mushy lovey dovey couple? (Argh, my eyes! I can't see a thing.....)

So as I was saying, the business wasn't too good at the T-junction. Desperate circumstances call for desperate measures. I went around talking to other lucky booths who managed to secure a place in front of the ever-crowded Kopitiam. And I realized that there was actually an empty space right in front of the Kopitiam, facing the OSL. And I sorta decided to kick that ever-useless OFM aside, and shifted our Origami booth to that empty space.

And oh boy, that space did have good fengshui! Business skyrocketed by leaps and bounds, and our black boards were rapidly filled up by the love-sick SMU students. Below are some of the pic of some of our love-smitten patrons:

For tomorrow’s lesson, we will briefly revise lessons from the previous term and also introduce katakana (one of the three native Japanese scripts). As opposed to hiragana, katakana has its own specialized use and rules. Furthermore, katakana was considered as the masculine script, whereas hiragana was feminine.

Another Japanese food festival is going on in Isetan Shaw House Supermarket...the place is normally very crowded especially during lunchtime...tried to take pictures but got pushed ard by the aunties...lots of food there...til I can't remember what are actually sold...but most of them are seafood...

L'Arc~en~Ciel's official website has announced that it will broadcast their 15th L'Anniversary Concert in 25 countries including Singapore. \^o^/ Wheee!!!

It will be the second time (if I'm not wrong) their concert is broadcasted on television, probably it will be shown from different angles again...

Let's hope for more news from them on the participating channels in the respective countries.

This was the first live accoustic performance of Japanese songs ever (I think) in school.

As the guest singer for Guitarissimo's beginner's class graduation chill-out session, Lili sang 2 songs such as Goodbye Days (from YUI) and Radical Dreamers (from Chrono Cross), backed by melodious guitar-strummings.

It received positive responses from the audiences even to those who have never heard of the songs before.

Thank you for all who came to support her today and hopefully we will have more of this collaboration in the future.

Hope the Death Note movie was a blast for all of you!! It was quite fun to watch with such a huge group. This sort of ends the events that JCC has for you guys this term. It's been a crazy but fulfilling term with lots of events for JCC members.

We had Big Gathering, Itadakimasu, Anime Screening, Chadou, Waseda Shibuya Senior High's School festival, Visit by WSSH during Sports fiesta, regular Japanese Language classes, the informal JLPT3 preparatory classes, Death Note movie outing...

We couldn't have done all this without such enthusiastic members and helpers for our events! Hontou ni ARIGATOU!

The Japanese film festival celebrates the joy of FRIENDSHIP, commemorating 40 years of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Japan.

As friendship knows no boundaries, the films selected this year will marvel the audience on how friendship can blossom in unforeseen cicrumstances.

19 popular films will be presented such as Linda Linda Linda, Captain Harlock in Arcadia, robocon and films by Kitano Takeshi. Ogigami Naoko, a young and emerging director will also be making a special appearance to present two of her outstanding features: Yoshino's Barber Shop and Kamone Diner.

Funfairs, school festivals... All of them are a great deal of fun~!!

At Waseda Shibuya High School, you get to try omu rice cooked by the students... Visit their exhibitions on calligraphy writings, science reports, play games like hook the balloon or whack-the-mole, pretend to be a shinobi for the day, visit the ghastly haunted house, watch the play 'nobuta', try the school uniforms, etc.....

I sure hope all of you had fun... It was an eye opening experience for all those who went.. Plus the Japanese little kids(those elementary sch children running ard) are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Kawaii!!!! Hahahahaa.... *heart melts*

ありがとう　皆さん　for joining JCC for our 茶道 ceremony today~~!!

I certainly hope you guys learnt a lot from the tea ceremony today! I think it was the first time any of us have ever tried to whisk tea from macha... Remember the whisking action.. to bring out the foam... :))

The elegant art of chadou..

The purposeful actions and the gentle nature that it tries to cultivate..

And... Only years of training can teach you how to kneel for 45mins or longer non-stop..

If you're interested in 茶道, there will be a tea gathering on November 5th at JAS. Tickets available from JAS and urasenke at $10 each. A renowned tea master will be holding a lecture and a tea gathering at JAS so look out for the event~!

Do come down and support our models on thursday evening, 7pm at the T-junction steps outside OCBC ok? Although it's only a short 20min programme, our models have spent many hours rehearsing in school, including on Saturdays and Sundays!! The costumes have been designed by Frank Koh, Christy Bell Goh and myself. :)

CERAMICS BEYOND BORDERS - Exhibition

The Japanese University Graduates Association of Singapore (JUGAS) and eZoo Music and Fine Arts, supported by the Japanese Embassy in Singapore and MICA will hold the “Ceramics Beyond Borders” event from 1st to 28th September 2006 at National Library Board (NLB) to commemorate the 40 years of strong bilateral ties between Singapore and Japan.

The exhibition will feature ceramic works by famous Singaporean and Japanese artists. The reason for focusing on ceramics is that ceramics in Asia has a rich history and tradition. Accordingly, ceramics is an appropriate medium by which to foster relationships between Singapore and Japan as well as to reach out to the rest of the world.

There are vast differences between the ceramics world of both countries. Singapore’s ceramics world is characterized by the multitude of works by passionate creators with no historical burden or baggage. In contrast, it is difficult to break out of the historical mould in Japan due to the 1000 years of ceramics history. Contemporary pottery artists are constantly seeking challenges in creating innovative works, whilst at the same time leveraging on Japan’s legacy of traditional styles.

The exhibition will showcase new and existing works by Japanese and Singaporean ceramic artists. The Singapore team will feature works by contemporary ceramics artists while the Japan team will consist of the biggest names in ceramics in Japan. These artists possess a high-level of commitment to push the frontiers of ceramics art, as well as a keen interest to promote cultural communication and interaction between both countries.

To sum up the event..

We went to JAS for an enriching cultural experience - ikebana exhibition.

HOT TIP:

::Did you know that there are a few key points to ikebana? That ikebana has to do with angles and lengths? That there was traditional and contemporary flower arrangements as well? ::

After the kind guide taught us about ikebana, we were left to wander around JAS for a while and soak in the atmosphere.

They have a comic room!! It's kinda like a library except the children all read the manga in there.. wall to wall shelves stacked full of japanese manga... It's OUR dream come true. haha..

All too soon it was over and we adjourned to our next destination..

With all tummies filled and appetites satiated, we moved on to the THIRD event of the DAY~ Kouhaku.. KHK... at NUS

KHK was entertaining for all anime fans and all non anime fans..

MUSIC, LIGHTS and ACTION!!

It was a whole lot of fun for all who attended...
I certainly hoped all of you had a subarashii and tanoshii time!!!
